New brand
After years of honing his craft as a timber furniture maker for both new and recycled timber, Matt Laing founded Barku Timber Furniture.
The brief was to create a contemporary visual brand that was no-nonsense and appealed to their wide audience base (all genders, multi-age brackets). Also of importance was allowing the timber to be the ‘hero’ of the brand, and to convey the sustainability of timber and Barku’s eco-friendly approach to timber furniture making.
Taking on board the brief, we created three brand concepts that kept the timber as the hero element. To do that, we muted the colour palettes and used big, bold designs that allowed the beauty of the timber to be showcased.
The attention to detail Barku uses in its sustainable custom timber furniture had to be evident in their brand delivery.
The creation of the icon was a play on the ‘k’ from the workmark, creating cohesion between the brand elements.
Using the navy as the base colour was both a branding and practicality choice, as being in the manufacturing industry requires a darker colour uniform.
